The post-graduate department of Microbiology was the first department to be established along with the inception of P.G.M. College, Kangazha in the year 2005. Ever since the department has shown tremendous growth in both quality and quantity
Microorganisms are ubiquitous and the most abundant among living organisms. Microbiology is a rapidly emerging scientific discipline that involves the study of microbes like viruses, bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa etc…This subject is of immediate and growing importance admist the current scenario of global pandemics like COVID, H1N1, or AIDS.
The department aims at imparting advance knowledge to our students both in the traditional fields of Microbiology like Medical Microbiology, Agricultural Microbiology, Environmental microbiology, Food, and Industrial Microbiology, along with newer fields like Molecular Microbiology, Bioinformatics Bioinstrumentation, microbial genetics, Intellectual Property Rights, Quantity Assurance, etc.. Laboratory courses of the department includes techniques in Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology, Immunoserology, Cytology, Environmental assessment, food and water analysis, and Molecular biology. Students are exposed to areas of current research, through their Project work and literature review papers. New horizons of Microbiology are opened to students through their annual institutional and Industrial visits.

A well equipped laboratory with required reagents is at students’ disposal. Students are trained under the direct supervision of experienced faculty. Students are trained in Clinical Microbiology, Quality Analysis, Food, and water testing, Molecular methods, Environmental assessment, etc.. Students are provided with comprehensive practical exposure, which equips them to be qualified professionals.
Activities
An association of the students of the department, known by the name ‘Biocoenosis – Inspire the Scientist in you’ in actively involved in various interactive programs. The association has conducted many outreach programs including street play, flash mob, and awareness sessions in the general community. Major events and days related to science and the environment are commemorated by the department with great hue. Association provides a platform for the students to showcase their, scientific, cultural, and literary talents.
Aspic Clubs- Antibiotic Stewardship and Prevention of Infection in Community is the largest global organization that is working to create awareness about the global menace of antibiotic resistance. An Aspic club operates in the college under the auspices of the department with direct guidance from ReAct Asia Pacific and Christian Medical College, Vellore. Various events, training programs and awareness sessions are conducted in college and nearby educational Institutions under the Aspic club.
Industrial and Institutional visits are conducted every year to enrich the learning experience of the students.
